Tasmī‘ means reciting the Quran from memory to someone who listens and corrects. It is the oldest way of checking memorization, and today it works very well online. Here is how an online tasmī‘ session works and how to get the most out of it.

Why recite to someone?

  • On your own you do not always notice what you forgot, skipped verses or confusion between similar passages.
  • The appointment makes you revise: you prepare your recitation.
  • A qualified teacher also corrects your pronunciation and tajweed.

How an online tasmī‘ session works

  • You say which portion you will recite (a page, a ḥizb, a surah).
  • You recite from memory, camera on or off as you choose.
  • The teacher follows in the mushaf and notes hesitations, slips and tajweed mistakes.
  • At the end, the teacher tells you which passages to work on and the next portion.

Prepare your session well

  • Revise the portion the day before and that morning.
  • Recite it aloud once before the session.
  • Note the verses where you hesitate so you can point them out to the teacher.
  • Find a quiet place and use headphones with a microphone.

Tasmī‘ and revision: the right combination

Tasmī‘ checks; revision consolidates. Ideally you regularly recite what you have just memorized and keep a daily revision of older portions. See a revision plan against forgetting and how an online hifz program works.

At Al-Azhar Message Academy tasmī‘ takes place in one-to-one lessons with an Al-Azhar graduate teacher who holds an ijazah; women recite to female teachers only, and the camera is optional.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Do I need to turn the camera on for tasmī‘?

No, the camera is optional; what matters is that the teacher can hear you clearly.

How much should I recite per session?

It depends on your level; often one to a few pages in 30 minutes, including corrections.
