Noor Al-Bayan for kids online is the right first step before memorizing the Quran: the child learns the letters and their sounds, then builds words until they can read from the mushaf on their own. At Al-Azhar Message Academy this happens in live one-to-one lessons with a male or female Al-Azhar graduate. The course is available in Arabic, English and French, and the first trial lesson is free.

Noor Al-Bayan or Noorani Qaida: what is the difference?

Both are methods for building Arabic reading and Quran reading. Both start with single letters and move step by step to reading verses. They differ in the order of the lessons and the way they are presented, but the goal is the same: the child pronounces each letter from its correct point of articulation and reads without long spelling-out. The teacher chooses the method that suits the child’s age and level after the trial lesson. Course details are in our Noorani Qaida online course.

Stages of learning in Noor Al-Bayan

  • Single letters: the shape, name and correct pronunciation of each letter.
  • Short vowels: fatḥah, ḍammah and kasrah, and reading each letter with them.
  • Long vowels (madd): alif, wāw and yā’ and how they are lengthened.
  • Sukūn, shaddah and tanwīn: reading full syllables and words.
  • Practice in the mushaf: reading real words and verses, in preparation for memorization.

Why one-to-one lessons are better for the foundation

The foundation stage is delicate: a small mistake in pronouncing a letter can stay with a child for years if it is not corrected early. In a one-to-one lesson the teacher hears every letter the child reads, repeats it with them until the pronunciation is right, and moves at the child’s own pace – the child is not held back by a group, nor rushed before mastering a lesson.

Suitable for children abroad who do not speak Arabic

Many children in Europe and America speak the language of their school for most of the day. That is why the explanation in the Noor Al-Bayan course can be in English or French, while the reading itself stays in Arabic.

How a Noor Al-Bayan lesson runs

  • Review of the previous lesson, read by the child.
  • A short new lesson that the teacher explains and the child reads after them.
  • Practice on words that combine what came before, then a simple task for home.

Parents can follow their child’s lessons. For boys, the parent chooses a male or female teacher; girls are taught by female teachers only.

Signs that your child has mastered the foundation

  • Reads a word directly without spelling out each letter.
  • Distinguishes in pronunciation between close letters such as sīn and ṣād, tā’ and ṭā’, hā’ and ḥā’.
  • Lengthens the long vowels by the right amount and stops on a letter with sukūn without adding a vowel.
  • Reads a line from the mushaf confidently and corrects themselves after a mistake.

When these signs appear, the teacher suggests moving on to memorization, and you can ask the teacher about your child’s level at any time.

What comes after Noor Al-Bayan?

When the child reads from the mushaf with confidence, they move on to memorization, usually starting with the short surahs of Juz ‘Amma. See our guide to how long memorization takes.
